‘my hands are monsters who believe in magic’: Asian American creatives get a grip on identity through artistic expression

Share: Art in the form of video, paint, photography and sculpture coat the walls. The silence between strangers creates an environment of reverence, relief, and reflection. Altadena resident John Qi said, “As a Chinese immigrant myself seeing art like this being celebrated is so strange, but in a good way because when I first came here decades ago it was alienating to express my culture, but now I come across spaces like this and it makes me so happy to see young kids being open …

Beyond the Skin: Pitzer professor exposes the covered-up Asian American roots of tattoo culture

Share: Four tattoos flashed across the screen. “How are we approaching the art of tattooing?” asked Todd Honma, professor of Asian American Studies at Pitzer College, addressing an audience of students in R-122 last Wednesday, June 4. The tattoos each varied in art style — some detailed and intricate, others bold and geometric. Honma encouraged the audience to participate in guessing the art styles each tattoo represented. Responses ranged from casual guesses to more informed identifications to even none at all. Regardless of their familiarity, …

Political Dissident: Trump’s militarization of Los Angeles only worsens civil unrest

Share: I had a whole plan for this week’s column. It’s my last as a student at PCC, and my final piece for the Courier. I wanted to write something neat – a tidy wrap-up of what’s happened in the U.S. since the start of the spring semester, maybe even include a call to action. A clean ending to a chaotic year. But then Donald Trump announced he was sending the National Guard to confront protesters in LA. I’ve always believed in protest – in …

Retention rates: Black students and staff are leaving because we’re tired of waiting

Share: In February of this year, I attended Dr. Darla Cooper’s presentation on Black Student Retention Rates for the Courier. Initially, the event was pitched as a potential news piece, until one of our writers made a counter-pitch arguing this issue wasn’t news, but history. As I attended Cooper’s presentation, those words rang true; Black staff and students alike voiced their frustrations of being tired of only talking about this issue instead of doing something about it. As a Black student, I wholeheartedly agree. Cooper’s …

CON: The Ten Commandments shouldn’t be displayed in schools

Share: A First Amendment violation occurred when a Texas bill that mandates every public school classroom display the Ten Commandments was passed last week.  The public is outraged at this bill as it violates our constitutional right to freedom of religion, and also completely contradicts the separation of church and state. This bill is an act of the government favoring a religion, and has raised many questions about the government’s violation of our First Amendment Right.  It is no surprise that many disagree with this …

New class search system grants easier registration access

Share: A new class search system to improve the Class Schedule Search was launched on May 27th according to a email sent to students  The primary reason behind the upgrade is that the current system is reliant on software that the vendor will stop supporting as of September this year. The new system will also support the new Common Course Numbering (CCN) system, which is being rolled out across the California community colleges this fall. Ultimately, the upgrades to the Class Schedule Search were an …

Mirror Pools sprout new eco-friendly lifestyle after upgrade

Share: After an entire semester, construction of and around the Mirror Pools that have been a part of PCC since 1937 has nearly concluded with the pools being given a  more modern aesthetic with a surrounding eco-friendly environment. The construction started as part of PCC’s Facilities Strategic Plan, a long-term campus revitalization initiative. Funding for the project comes from Measure PCC, a bond measure approved by local voters in November 2022. The plan aims to enhance the college’s outdoor spaces, to repair infrastructure, and to …
