‘Tortured Poets’ succeeds with emotional story of two heartbreaks

Share: For the average person, releasing a double album after a year filled with a record-breaking tour and movie combo, and a triage of high-profile relationships ending and beginning sounds like hell on earth, but not if you’re Taylor Swift. Swift’s latest whopping 31-track release “The Tortured Poets Department” and its sister “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology” highlight a new but also not-so-new stage of her stardom, the double breakup album. Coming out just under two years after her last big release “Midnights” (which …

Internet does mental backflips to defend abusers

Share: Another day, another Hollywood celebrity who fumbled their whole career over something easily avoidable. Enter Jonathan Majors, the up-and-coming star who really caught steam within the last year or two with his appearance in the ridiculously popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. Majors found himself caught up in a domestic violence scandal that only recently concluded with him avoiding jail time. Unfortunately for everyone, internet sensationalism has once again come to the rescue and attempted to change the narrative on a situation the internet doesn’t even …

‘Abigail’ sinks teeth into vampire genre with hilariously hammy bloodbath

Share: Finally freed from the clutches of Ghostface and the “Scream” franchise, Radio Silence is back to deliver bloody goodness to the big screen with their latest release “Abigail.” Moving on from slashers the team has tackled the tried and true vampire genre of horror to a perfectly hilarious and gory effect.  This movie’s set-up starts out fairly simply and involves a group of criminals, given code names based on the rat pack, who kidnap a girl (the titular Abigail) who is the daughter of …

The US’s TikTok ban is a sham

Share: After spending the last four years going back and forth on a potential TikTok ban in the US, it would appear the government is actually, and finally, poised to go through with it. This should come as no surprise to anyone paying attention, the right has demonized the popular social media app for years, and now they’ve got democrats agreeing with them too!   Despite trying to use the allure of “protecting Americans’ data and privacy” the US government is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, …

8-Bit comes to life in PCC orchestra’s video game concert

Share: As the lights dimmed in the Sexson Auditorium, the bright opening titles of “The Legend of Zelda” played on an overhead screen and the dazzled audience then looked to the PCC Orchestra, walking through some of the most beloved music scores in video games. The event, held on Mar. 23, was the group’s first concert of the 2024 spring semester and focused entirely on an idea presented by students, video games. Conductor and Orchestra professor Henry Shin wanted to act on this idea for …

Time to put the Ghostbusters in the deep freezer for good

Share: Two years after the Ghostbusters made their return to the big screen in “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” they’ve taken back to NYC to revel in their spirit-chasing antics. But despite their killer comeback in 2022, all that “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” left me feeling disappointed and hollow. The story once again follows the Spengler family of Callie, Trevor, and Phoebe as well as Phoebe’s summer teacher Gary (played by Paul Rudd) who’s for some reason still palling around with his former student’s family. They’ve taken up residence …

Character appropriation: Zack Snyder doesn’t respect comics canon

Share: Zack Snyder doesn’t get comic books. It’s by no means a new sentiment, in fact, Snyder has been ripped to shreds time and time again over his views going back as far as when he completely butchered “Watchmen” in 2009. But those transgressions and concepts almost pale in comparison to his most recent statements that lit comic-book fandoms everywhere ablaze. This time around instead of mildly polarizing audiences with his films, Snyder went straight for the jugular and took a critical stance on Batman’s …

EDITORIAL: Angelenos aren’t ready for the Olympics and neither is the city

Share: Despite being years away, the 2028 Olympics loom over the heads of all Angelenos in the greater LA county area. While the prospect of an economic boom looks appealing, the question remains: Can the city be fully prepared for this? The answer is a very eye-opening “no” unless significant change can be spurred in four years. Los Angeles is home to about 3.849 million people as of the 2020 census, but within that colossal figure lies a vast number of people without homes. As …

‘Dune: Part Two’ leaves its predecessor in the dust as it soars to extraordinary heights

Share: Director Denis Villeneuve is known for breathtaking visuals mixed with fantastic character work to boot, and no movie gives him more of an opportunity to show this off than the “Dune” series. After a three-year-long wait, Villeneuve has returned to his Sci-Fi epic with “Dune: Part Two.” Truthfully, it’s hard to put into words how amazing this movie is, as it takes a serious step up in every department over its predecessor.    The movie once again follows Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, and …
