Twenty-year-old Jessica “Jess” Perez is a spirited sociology major who, after two years at PCC, is getting ready to transfer to UCLA in the spring, in hopes of someday becoming a social worker.Perez, a self-proclaimed swimming pool junkie, greatly anticipates every relaxing weekend offering her a routine break from the hectic, stressful school week. Free time to unwind and forget about her worries, either in the water or with close friends.

1. Neighborhood Walk, Alhambra

I consider Friday as part of my weekend because I don’t have class. I always start my Fridays by taking my beautiful black chihuahua “Toots” for a walk. She is so lively and I usually let her lead the walk. We venture around the neighborhood for a good mile or so, until she has released all her energy and I have to carry her back home.

2. N*E*R*D and Common Concert, Anaheim

I love music and I adore concerts. If there is a good show somewhere in the area in the evening my friends and I will definitely be there. The Nerd and Common concert is the best concert I’ve seen so far. I went with about six of my close friends and it was really fun. I even caught Pharrel’s towel when he threw it in the crowd. I’ve seen Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Rhianna, and Coldplay. The list goes on and on.

3. YMCA, San Marino

Every Saturday morning I go to work at the YMCA pool. I teach two swimming classes for six-and seven-year-olds, and two advanced classes for teens. Sometimes after class I participate in the water aerobics class with a bunch of old ladies. It’s a good workout and I get to relax in the pool.

4. Friend’s House, Los Angeles

My friend was throwing a party for his birthday. So I baked him some brownies and headed over. Once again I spent the evening with my best friends. We dance, conversate, play drinking games, and just have fun. If it’s not a party we’re going to it’s a club or some kind of social gathering. I just don’t want to be home on a Saturday night. I usually come home very late and sleep in the next morning.

5. YMCA, San Marino

When I wake up I go to the YMCA to pull lifeguard duty for a few hours. It’s a nice place to go and relax after a long night. The water calms and soothes me. I have good luck, not one person has needed my help since I’ve been doing this. I haven’t had to rescue anyone.

6. Home, Alhambra

After work in the afternoon I come home and bake. I love baking for my brother, sister, and friends. Brownies are my specialty but I also like to bake cakes, cupcakes, or pie as well. My sweets make people happy so I have no problem making them. I feel bad for my dad though, he loves my deserts but he can’t eat them because he has diabetes.

7. BJ’s Bar and Grill, Glendale

On Sunday evening my friends and I go to BJ’s. We have a friend that works there so she usually hooks it up with free food and drinks. Their pizookies are the best. It’s this humongous deep fried cookie topped with ice cream. It’s so yummy! I go with a lot of my guy friends on Sunday and I end up watching Sunday Night Football. I don’t mind because I love those guys. I leave super full and I go straight home to study a little before school the next day.

As told to Richard Garcia.
