Visitors from surrounding high schools were welcomed to PCC Tuesday with a musical flavor, as the Jazz Rock Big Band greeted all the Career and Technology and Education high school students. The band played various musical numbers on the quad, ranging from classical to Spanish.

The band isn’t a group of amateurs. To be in the band each student has to go through a tryout.

Connie Kim, 21, music, sang a couple of songs during the event that showcased her range and style. Each musician has a flare and adapts well to different styles of music.

“A lot of students try out but very few make it. You need to have a college level of playing to be apart of this band,” said Kim.

The band performs at free concerts in The Quad twice a month during the spring semester. Andre Wikerson is the conductor and also the instructor for the music class. Wilkerson arranged most of the musical numbers for the concert but students are encouraged to write their own material.

“I checked other schools around and this is by far the best jazz program. Wilkerson even lets students make some arrangements,” said Kim.

The vibe that Jjazz music sets in campus is different with a sense of harmony and relaxation and culture, especially for potential new students.

This is a different side of PCC most high school students are not aware off.

Angel Martinez, visiting from Blair High School, was really impressed with how the band played. Martinez had a front row seat for the performance.

“I like the environment. I like how the campus feels. Its beautiful and the students are very friendly. I’ve never seen a live band play before. It makes the tour fun and makes me really want to come here,” said Martinez.
