Latino Scholarship is not only for Latinos, it is available to all ethnic groups. The President’s Latino Advisory Committee is comprised of dedicated educators and community leaders committed to improve excellence in education. They are determined to provide a means towards better educational opportunities for Latinos and other qualified PCC students.

“I thought the Latino Scholarship was only for Latinos,” said Darleen Ventenilla, a nursing student, surprised when her Spanish teacher announced the opportunity to apply for Financial Aid during a spring day class.

“Oh, no,” Lola Proano-Gomez, language professor, corrected her enthusiastically.

“Applicants need to demonstrate how through their interactions with the Latino community, they have an understanding of the Latino culture and explain how achieving their career goals will positively affect the Latino community. Applicants don’t have to be Latinos.”

Proano-Gomez informed the, suddenly, extremely attentive students that in 2007 the committee awarded three $1,000 scholarships, and this year four are up for grabs. The committee strives to improve the educational success of students at PCC. Deserving individuals just need to ask for assistance.

“Too bad that my GPA is not high enough,” said Michelle Gomez, undecided, sadly. Looking through the paperwork her face brightened up as she discovered that a 2.5 GPA is sufficient enough to become eligible for submitting her application.

Teachers are announcing scholarship opportunities in various classes and urging students to take advantage of these great chances. Construction student John Hui unsuccessfully tried to receive this scholarship some years ago, but after Proano-Gomez’s encouraging words he decided to try again.

To be considered for the Latino Scholarship candidates need to pick up an application package at the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, located in L114, and submit the completed document by April 25.
