Journalism students won a dozen prizes, including the Magazine General Excellence award, at the annual Journalism Association of Community College State Convention held at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles from April 8-10.The Courier and Spotlight, the student-produced magazine, won six awards each. The magazine was judged on its 2009 issue.

Spotlight Photo Editor Rosa Vasquez won three individual awards, a third place finish in the magazine cover category and both second and third places for her photo essays. She also won for layout and design with Spotlight Editor-in-Chief Christina Demirchyan.

Courier Features Editor Catherine Sum placed first in copy editing, while Opinion Editor Hannah Leyva won first place in feature writing and received an honorable mention in opinion writing.

In the mail-in category, which judged work published in last semester’s issues, the Courier also won awards.

Chief Photographer Brian Warouw won fourth place in the sports action category, and a group of photographers garnered an honorable mention for their collective photo essay. Another writer, Arts and Entertainment Editor Aubrey Quezada, won fourth place in the profile feature story category.
