We all view the library as a place we can get our work done. Yet, peace and quiet does not seem to be the environment in the Shatford Library these days, as students heading over there in hopes of getting some study time are coming out disappointed. Even with all the signs telling students specifically to be quiet, it seems like many people are disregarding this rule. They don’t even tone it down when they are asked. “We ask them to be quiet, but as soon as we get back to our seats it’s the same thing again,” said Tina Kampor a student worker.

Many of us are easily distracted by the temptations awaiting us at home so we take what little time we have in between classes to get our studying done.

“I study at the library, because there isn’t much distraction, whereas at home, the TV and everything [is distracting],” said Janet Lu a psychology major. This is causing students to not have a study place that is promised to them.

This problem can just as easily be solved if students were considerate enough to just keep their voices down and let people who actually use their time wisely, study. The library isn’t a place for fun and games and should be used to get work done.
For those who want to actually work in the library, complaints are expected. However, it seems that even the workers around the library have noticed the need to create a more work friendly environment.

“I asked somebody to leave once before, because they were playing cards,” said Katrina Ehrnman, another student worker. PCC is a pretty large campus with many places to hang out. For those who want to converse with their friends, spending time in areas like the Galloway Plaza will not only give you the satisfaction of spending time with friends, but it will also prevent others in the library from being distracted.

Even though this is a problem, students do agree they can find some quiet time depending on what time of the day they decide to go.

“Evenings are when I get my best studying done, but during the day time it’s pretty loud,” said student Jose Olmos. Other students like Connor McGuire, who look for quiet spots around the library, said, “I feel it’s too noisy on the second floor by the windows, but on the third floor, I find it’s pretty nice.”

Next time, before you decide to attend the library for reasons other than studying, please take into consideration the students attempting to study.
