The increase in the price of gas has made the cost of college more expensive than before. Even as the tuition cost per unit has dropped, gas prices are higher than ever.Transportation costs average about $559 to $587 per student per semester at PCC, according to the cost of attendance budget for 2007-08 on the college website. Students are coming from all over to attend classes at PCC and gas prices are taking a toll on their wallets. Kingsley Luu, English major, commutes from Los Angeles. He recently had to get a job closer to the campus in order to be on time to classes.

“The traffic is the worst part,” said Luu, “And now with gas being so expensive I had to make sure my class and work schedule fit around that.”

Some students opt to carpool in order to save money on gas. Others stopped driving to school altogether and now ride the bus or the Metro Gold Line.

Sean Phillips, business major, commutes to campus along with a friend.

“We take turns driving to school. We have classes at the same time and it saves gas for at least a few days out of the week,” said Phillips.

The gold line has become a convenient means of travel for many PCC students – with Allen station just a few blocks away. Students seeking alternative choices to commute to and from school, or simply to avoid driving costs and parking fees, use the campus shuttle service regularly.
