Skateboarding isn’t just a sport. It’s another solution students are using to transport themselves to and from school.

Diego Kirsten, psychology, said skateboarding is a good way to get around campus. Kirsten used to have a regular skateboard, but prefers his current longboard. He uses it to cruise to and from classes. Kirsten said there are many different types of longboards, most of which is used for transport, downhill riding, and carving. He also said due to his tall and top-heavy build, the longboard gives him more balance than a regular skateboard.

“I don’t want to drive [to campus],” Kirsten said, “and spend ten [dollars] because of the cost of gas.”

Will Rosales, business, drives from Burbank to campus but sometimes skateboards to class. Rosales said skateboarding would save students money if they live very far from campus. He, however, uses a normal skateboard since he prefers to do tricks.

“[I skateboard] just to enjoy it and exercise,” Rosales said. “[It helps me] relieve stress and be active.”

Diavaughn Stevenson, undecided, uses a longboard for transportation. He recommends the “campus cruiser” variant of skateboard for transportation because of its small size.

“Longboards are faster than regular skateboards,” Stevenson said. “[They] are more like cruisers.”

Mark Lauback, communications, cruises on his longboard to campus from the student parking lots. Lauback said he especially loves to park on the roof of the parking lot 4 and cruise on his longboard to the first level of the parking structure. When he’s not skateboarding, he usually surfs.

“I just enjoy it [skateboarding],” Lauback said. “It keeps me in track with nature and with the concrete wave. It’s style, it’s a way for me to keep myself connected to surfing and snowboarding.”
