The men finished second in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 41.08 falling just short behind the CSULA team who finished with 40.90. It was a wire-to-wire race with CSULA edging PCC to take the trophy.

The largest field in meet in the school history competed Saturday at the Tommy “Tiny” Lister Classic at Jesse Owens Track on the campus of CSULA and PCC had some players compete in the event.

Diane Lombardi finished second in the women’s 1500-meter run falling short behind Regina Lopez from CSU Pomona. Lombardi finished with a time of 4:56.24 which fell short of Lopez’ time of 4:55. Lancers, Arielle Barragan-`Steimer finished 11th with a 5:04.4 and Elizabeth Lyons finished 13th with a 5:05.52.

“I only get nervous when I’m on the line. Before the race I’m just excited because I like competing,” said Lyons “Every participant is putting their heart on the competition.”

Cassandra Lew finished 10th in the Women’s 1500 meter run finishing with a time of 5:27.44. “I’m nervous (before races) definitely” said Lew “Especially wanting to transfer and to impress the coaches from universities that are participating in the event.” Lew has an unusual mindset before every game “I break down the race into segments to plan how I’m going to attack it,” she said.

Mellisa Hadloc finished right behind Lew with a 5:30.00 time, finishing just in front of teammate Michelle Escamilla and Thelma Cruz.

“I get nervous. Mostly on bigger races such as this one, where many schools are competing,” said Hadloc. “I always hope I finish at a decent time.”

In the men’s long jump, Malik Gillins, finished 7th jumping 6.48 meters, edging CSU Bakersfield jumper, Brandon Washington.

“I usually stretch and pray before I got out there,” said Gillins “I wish I did a better job today with all the scouts watching.”

Coach Larry Wade was very impressed by all of his runners that competed on Saturday.  “We had a great day,” said Wade “All our distance runners ran their personal best, it was fun.” Wade also mentioned how important it was for the competitors to compete in this event. “We use invitational’s like these to learn from them, this is kind of like our mid-term” said Wade “This is the time of the year when coach Armand Crespo and I gel well together.”

The weekend proved warm conditions for the competitors. CSULA greeted nearly 1,000 competitors who were on hand for the annual meet held in honor of Lister, who won the national championship for CSULA in 1982.
