The Halloween phrase “trick or treat” has long been associated with the holiday, but lately the “treat” has been embraced, leaving the “trick” with the unpopular costumes and sugar-free candy. As you get older, trick or treating by yourself could be out of the question, but pranks allow both young and older generations to participate in the fun.

“I usually put up some special decorations: jack-o-lantern and pumpkin lights,” said Peggy Brickert, senior purchasing clerk for purchasing services at PCC.

“One year my friend came to my house dressed in a witch’s hat and black cape and sat on my porch. People were afraid to come to the door and she really frightened a lady who was with her daughter,” she said.

“As long as it is safe, I like to keep it light and fun,” she added.

Pranks will not be played on the children coming to celebrate Halloween from the Child Development Center, but it is expected that decorations and a lot of effort will be put into the offices.

“We will dress in costumes and have tables set up for the children who will pass through the hallway,” said Brickert.
With costumes getting more cutting edge and creative with each year, pranks have been left at the wayside.

Some have mixed feelings about the classic – but out of date – pranks during Halloween night, such as tee-peeing a house and front lawn ,and lighting a paper bag filled with dog poo on-fire on a doorstep.

“Pranks like those aren’t old. I would do them again,” said Andre Bueno, sports nutrition major.

“We need to come up with new pranks. It’s lame and way out of date,” said Orel Rondon, criminal justice major.

Searching for new pranks through online forums like Yahoo can result in some unique pranks and amusing memories.

Members of the forums shared their funniest and most extreme pranks that were pulled on Halloween night. When executed on you guy-friends, wrapping a car in saran wrap or a toilet may produce some laughs.

Tricks on lawns seem to be popular. Two of the top lawn pranks were sticking over 100 plastic forks in the lawn, and pouring dish soap on a lawn to surprise those watering their lawns.

“Coming up with new things is the most important part about playing pranks. Taking advice from those who have done pranks before helps you keep it fresh,” said PCC student Amin Marcano.

Not just a phrase, but a custom adopted by our society, trick or treating is when children go door to door soliciting candy from neighbors and threatening the neighbors with a prank if the treats aren’t given.

According to the online encyclopedia of encarta, at the start of the 1970s, trick or treating went into a sharp decline after unproven rumors circulated about homeowners giving poisoned Halloween candy to children.

“I remember that. My mom used to inspect my candy like the DEA. I would play pranks regardless of that. I am 18 and I still play pranks,” said Bueno.

Today, many parents accompany children when they go trick-or-treating, concerned about their children being outside at night.

With police patrols in the neighborhood and watchful parents, pranksters are not disheartened, but rather challenged.

“It’s that excitement [of possibly] getting caught or getting away with it. It’s a rush,” said Rondon.
