The board of trustees approved a contract on Sept. 19 with Verizon Wireless for $6.8 million to overhaul PCC’s infrastructure network. The money for the upgrades will come from Measure P funding, which was passed by voters five years ago for major retrofits and general upgrades for the campus, said PCC President Paulette Perfumo.

“Verizon will streamline and update all cabling and systems,” she said. “This will be a comprehensive project.”

The contract will upgrade district voice and network systems as well as desktop stations. This plan includes new phones for staff and faculty as well as improved cabling for future projects.

Mark Glanzman, contract specialist for PCC, said: “In the latter part of the project wireless spots will be established on campus allowing staff and students access to the Internet from their own computers.”

This project is slated to start this month and will take 18 to 24 months to finish.

“The Community Education Center will also receive these upgrades to the trans-network infrastructure,” Glanzman added.

“Technology touches every area of our lives,” said Perfumo. “We have to plan for the beyond.
