Veteran and former Pasadena City College student Efren “Ren” Celestino took his own life last week at 31 years old, emphasizing the nation’s epidemic of veteran mental illness and suicide.
PCC has one of the best collegiate reputations in the state including state of the art facilities, great teachers and a challenging curriculum. But none of this means anything if its students don’t feel they can trust their administration.
At last night’s board meeting, numerous members of the Veterans Club confronted the board about the failure of the administration and board to foresee the cut of the proposed Veterans Affairs (VA) clinic on campus that they fought so hard for the past two years.
Joseph Amador, a history major, served four years in the Navy as an Aviation Ordnanceman also known as “mag rats.” His job description involved building bombs and rockets, while also maintaining torpedoes, aerial mines and missiles. Spending most of his time on the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72 below the water line in the ship, he was unable to see the light of day for long periods of time.
