The Lancers volleyball team likes to put on a good show for their fans. In their conference home-opener, it was the Lancers who got out to another slow start against visiting Long Beach City College (3-8).

Getting off to a slow 2-6 start in their opening match, the Lancers would rally back to score five straight points to take the 7-6 lead.

“We just need to calm down and focus on our technique,” said assistant coach Kari Post. “If we stay focused on our team and keep up our good defensive play we can go far.”

With the game tied at 19 apiece in the first set, the Lancers would go on to score five straight points and never look back, defeating the Vikings 25-20, 25-16, 25-11.

“We had to calm ourselves down in the beginning,” said middle blocker Angela Banuelos. “We were beating ourselves so we just had to focus and play to our potential. We knew we couldn’t afford to lose tonight.”

The freshmen tandem of Banuelos and Kendra Logan were bouncing out of the gym on both offense and defense. Against the Vikings Logan recorded a season-high six blocks while Banuelos added six kills to go with five blocks.

“Kendra and Angela have been playing great,” Post said. “This week we worked hard with them technique wise, and it showed today. Those two really helped us by dominating the net tonight.”

In the second set, the Lancers started strong with an early 3-0. However, the Vikings would not go away and battled back to take a 5-8 lead. After falling behind in the second set, sophomore outside hitter Nora To’omalatai took over and propelled the Lancers to victory.

To’omalatai finished the night with a team high 18 kills to go along with five digs and three service aces. Thula Parks added 10 kills and five digs for the Lancers and Saige Spence displayed her defensive prowess with 10 digs.

“We really wanted to win tonight,” Logan said. ”We realized what we were doing wrong and corrected our mistakes. Our coaches pulled us together and let us know what we needed to work on and we corrected our mistakes. We’re playing great right now and we’re looking forward to Trade Tech.”

The Lancers volleyball team travels to play Los Angeles Trade Tech at 7PM tomorrow.
