As men’s baseball coach Evan O’Meara goes into his eighth coaching season at PCC this spring semester he feels confident in the team and is expecting a winning season.

Aside from sending the sophomore players off to 4-year institutions, O’Meara hopes to break a 30-year streak.

“My goal is to compile the first winning season that this baseball program has had since the early 80s,” he said.

“In 2002 they finished at 20-18 but two of the wins were by forfeit. I want the wins legitimately where we won them on the field, not by technicality” said O’Meara.

Assistant coach Nick Gomez agreed with O’Meara.

“We have pretty high expectations, we struggled the last two seasons in conference but this season we’re expecting to finish in the top two or three,” said Gomez.

While the team’s home diamond is currently being fixed after it was used as a parking structure during the Rose Parade, the team is making the best of PCC’s Robinson Stadium.

“We don’t have a field so we are limited to the things we do, but we are also more determined and everyone has the same goal, which is to be a great ballclub,” said sophomore right-fielder Anthony Martinez.

Sophomore and aerospace engineering major Camilo Girardo measures improvements compared to last season through skill.

“We made a lot of improvements. We have some good incoming freshmen, and returning sophomores, and skill wise we’re definitely ten times better than last season,” he said.

Coach O’Meara noticed the difference in the team’s effort.

“This particular team has more depth and is stronger than any team I’ve had since I’ve been here,” said O’Meara.

“They have made it easier for me to be a true coach. In the past I’ve had to do more hand-holding and problem-solving and this group is more mature and capable of self motivation.”
