The PCC women’s water polo team truly enhanced its defensive skills for the Cabrillo Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lancers were able to limit its four competitors’ goals to a total of 23, emerging with two wins and two losses. The Lancers (4-6, 1-1) opened the tournament with a 12-5 victory against West Valley College. Brianna Estrada led the defense, enabling Darly Htike and Anneke Forrest to score four goals each. Nicole Young added two goals while Fernanda Camacho and Cynthia Martinez each placed one goal. PCC took a total of 35 shots on the goal while goalie Hannah Hogue made 11 saves.

“Estrada was unselfish and more of a playmaker with four assists, and that team style was contagious as we had nine assists overall,” said Head Coach Terry Stoddard. “We even had one assist from Hogue on a long pass during a counter attack.”

On the same day, the Lancers won their second match against Ohlone with the score of 11-3. They continued their performance with nine assists and 25 shots on the goal. On the defense, Hogue came through with 10 saves, three steals and one assist. Camacho stood out in the offense with five goals and three assists. Forrest added two goals and two assists while Young had two goals and one assist.

On Saturday, the Lancers lost in a 9-2 match against Cuesta. The team was limited to 10 shots on the goal as Martinez and Lisa Munoz each scored one goal. Hogue made seven saves and three steals. The Lancers committed a total of 10 steals, the most this season for one game.

“In the first half they were no better than us,” said Stoddard. “Instead, we turned the ball over twice. At the half we were in position to make it an even game. We pressed our offensive adjustments coming out in the second [half] but it left us open to the counter, allowing them to score five goals in the third [quarter].”

As the Lancers went back to their old system, it was a scoreless fourth quarter.

The final match in the Cabrillo Tournament was a 6-4 loss to San Joaquin. Hogue was incredible with 10 saves and five steals, two from long passes and three from the center forward. Htike scored two goals while Camacho and Martinez each scored one. The game was 5-3 at halftime. Each team allowed only a single goal during the entire second half.

“This was our best game [performance] this year,” said Stoddard. “We still need to finish on our scoring opportunities but we created opportunities.
