Broadway Songbook, a musical revue performed by students of a summer intersession performance course, is planned to open Aug. 19, according to Theater and Dance instructor Richard Kuller.

The revue will feature 14 singer-actor-dancers, as well as an eight-piece chamber orchestra, he said. The show’s musical director is Performing Arts instructor, Glenn Carlos.

“Broadway Songbook will focus on shows adapted from classic literary works [and] songs by Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein, [to name just a few],” Kuller said.

“We’re particularly having fun with Shakespeare’s plays,” said Kuller, “[and] showing how they were transformed into modern shows like Kiss Me Kate and West Side Story.”

Some songs will be performed satirically or in surprising contexts, Kuller said. Preparation for the revue was “challenging for [the] students and will be enlightening and great fun for the audience,” he said.

Kuller, who directed the musical, has taught the eight-week, intensive summer program for singers, actors and dancers for seven years. He said an audition was required to attend the class and the participants ranged from professionals to first-time performers.

The performances will be held in PCC’s The Little Theater, in Building C, Room 106, and are scheduled for Aug. 19, at 8 p.m., Aug. 20, at 2 p.m., 8 p.m., and Aug. 21, at 3 p.m.
