Jury selection for the second trial of former PCC student Isaac Campbell, accused of killing his girlfriend and hiding her body, is expected to begin in the first part of May.

The next court date is set for April 30, where a date for jury selection is expected to be set, according to District Attorney Steve Ipson.

“Jury selection should begin approximately May 9,” Ipson said in a phone interview. “The next court appearance is April 30. [I] Expect jury selection to begin the next week.”

Isaac Campbell is accused of killing his girlfriend Liya “Jessi” Lu, both former PCC students. During last years trial, Campbell admitted to concealing her body in a trashcan and covering the body with kitty litter.  He then hid the trashcan in a friend’s garage in Arcadia and fled to Minnesota where he was arrested.

Last year’s case ended in hung jury causing a mistrial mostly because there was no cause of death determined due to the mummification of the body from the kitty litter. Medical Examiner Dr. Pedro Ortiz was unable to find a cause of death, but labeled the manner of death a homicide considering the evidence.

Ipson has argued that Campbell may have killed Lu with a martial arts chokehold.  Public Defender Jim Duffy says that Lu was fatally hurt when thrown onto the futon by Campbell after an altercation.

In court Campbell said he did not call emergency services because of a bad history with police.

Police also found about $4,000 worth of orange diesel marijuana and some of Lu’s belongings in Campbell’s apartment.  Campbell also replied to several text messages from family on Lu’s phone.

Campbell is facing charges of second degree murder and is being held at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles, his bail as been set at $1,025,000.
