Freshman guard ChaRunn Jones’ seven three pointers gave him a total of 101 on the season, breaking the PCC record of 96 previously held by 1990-91 Lancer freshmen Chris Jones in their 91-80 loss to the visiting Los Angeles City College Cubs Friday night at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. The Lancer’s first nine points in the second half came from three of his seven threes. 21 of Jones’ 23 points came from behind the arc. On a night when Jones’ was well over his 12.5 scoring average and point guard Corey Caston doubled his 13.4 average with his team leading 25 points the Lancers squandered a 12 point lead in the half for their second South Coast Conference North Division loss.

Caston also finished with nine assists. His 198 on the season ties him up for the state lead and is three away from breaking the season record for PCC. The record is currently held by 1986-87 player Paul Campbell with 200.

PCC players Tyree McCarey, Elliot Berry, and Joel Nolen helped the Lancers climb to a strong eight point lead at the end of the half with six points each. Berry and McCarey got in to foul trouble quickly in the second half and were rendered ineffective.

The first place Cub’s shutdown the post and allowed the Lancer’s only 40 points in the second half. Fabian Wilson and Cord Desmond allowed McCarey to score only two and Berry three points during the half.

“From a defensive standpoint we just didn’t get the job done. In big games you got to get it done. It’s as simple as that,” said PCC head coach Mike Swanegan.

The Lancers are now 18-9 overall and have slid to 2-2 in conference play. The next game is against the Los Angeles Trade Tech on Friday, in their fifth South Coast Conference match of the season.

“We got to back on track. It’s a tough conference. Going from 4 wins to 18 wins isn’t that bad,” concluded Swanegan.
