The Courier newspaper won the General Excellence Award for the fifth year at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Southern California conference earlier this month.The conference was held at CSU Fullerton. About 480 journalism students attended from 27 southern California community colleges.

Courier staffers, as well as photographers of the student-run magazine Spotlight, won 13 individual and group awards.

Mail-in winners included: Roger Lai, first place for magazine photo essay; Catherine Sum, Barbara Beaser and Janine Shimomura, honorable mention for news story; Shimomura, honorable mention for an opinion story; Beaser and Jenny Bartlett, second place for front page layout- tabloid; Sum, first and second place for profile feature stories; Daniel Lottes and Danny Reyes, fourth place for inside page layout- tabloid; and Sara Medina, second place for sports game story.

On-the-spot contest winners included: Aubrey Quezada, first place for feature story-writing, Art Lemus, second place for bring-in photo; Kari Kase, honorable mention for feature photo, and Amrah Khan, second place for copy editing.
