During spring break, a time when most students are on vacation, there will still be students getting an education on campus. For the second year in a row, the PCC Police Department will be offering its Police Cadet Academy, which according to the brochure, is “a precise replica of a POST (Police Officer Standard Training) accredited police academy, absent firearms.”

The academy is a weeklong program, taking place between April 19 and April 23.

“The cadet academy is a preparation and simulation of the courses that the cadets will go through at the police academy,” said Lucia Jaime, office assistant to the police cadet academy.

The cadets go through various courses that are offered at a Police Academy, including the laws of arrest, ethics in law enforcement, narcotics enforcement, law enforcement response to terrorism, traffic enforcement, and preliminary investigations, according to the brochure.

The cadet academy brings to campus a number of instructors, ranging from college professors to POST accredited officers from other departments in the region, according to Jaime.

Although despite being a precise replica of a police academy, firearms training is not present which, according to Jaime, is due to a lack or certification.

According to both Jaime and Nava, one of the key things that the cadets learn during the program is to develop a family among the group. “They grow a bond with each other, and that really helps them all get through the program,” says Nava

At the end of the week, the cadets go on a 5-mile pride run, with all of the cadets bearing the colors of their respective departments. Then there is a graduation where each cadet is presented with his or her diplomas and achievement awards.
