PCC’s South Coast Conference champion women’s badminton team was dominated by defending state champion Irvine Valley College, 19-2, in the Southern California team championship match at Irvine Valley College on Wednesday.PCC (8-2, 7-1) was missing its top player, freshman Priscilla Lun, who was absent from the match due to a family emergency.

Freshman Jean Ma and sophomore Kimtran Huynh were the only Lancers to capture a victory over the Lasers (9-0), both in singles matches.

“They came out and competed,” PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez said of his team.?”We were overmatched and they didn’t back down. We showed a lot of progress.”

Prior to the loss to Irvine Valley, the Lancers had won eight straight matches, following their opening loss to East Los Angeles College on Feb. 27.

The Lasers were led by sophomore Eva Lee who easily captured two singles victories.

Lee played with the U.S. Olympic Team in the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing and won the state individual and doubles title as a freshman last season.

Irvine Valley now looks to compete for their second consecutive state title.

The Lancers now look toward the SCC?Individual Tournament, that will be played at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club on Friday.

“[The match against Irvine Valley] was good work for us,” Sanchez said. “Now we have to focus on the Individual Tournament.”

Winners from the SCC?tournament will advance to the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship on May 7 at Irvine Valley College.
