The Pie Hole is a family run organization owned by Matthew Heffner and Sean Brennan. The idea for this pie shop was a long time in the making and started with Heffner and his mother, who have always dreamed about opening a pie shop.

The shop first opened in Downtown LA in October 2011 and later opened in Pasadena in September 2014.

“The process is interesting because we are defining the ‘pie shop’ concept as we go,” Brennan said, “We think as long as we focus on great pie, great coffee, and excellent service as out mission, the rest will work itself out.”

Making pies has been a multi-generation tradition in their family and their long time family recipes have made it to Colorado Boulevard. The smaller version of their pie shop is located in a space that has a trendy, hipster feel and is shared with other vendors like Intelligentsia.

“We had the opportunity to be a part of a large multi-vendor establishment,” Heffner said. “ We jumped at the chance, not only to be a part of Old Town Pasadena, but to open a different type of Pie Hole and see if it’s a feasible design.”

The Pie Hole is set up in a very roomy space with an industrial/loft style that Heffner and Brennan think is a very good fit for their brand.

They carry the common line-up of pies like lemon meringue and apple, but the most popular flavors at The Pie Hole are Earl Grey, Mexican chocolate, and maple custard. During the fall season, they also have another favorite: Moe’s Pumpkin Pie.

“All of our traditional pies are family recipes, but our unique flavorsome brainchild are of our talented pastry team,” Heffner said.

The savory pies are definitely one to try. They span from a breaded, flaky puff pastry shell to your basic potpies. Atop that, they carry their own organic coffee to pair with their pies.

“I love coming here. It’s a nice place to come hang out and relax while eating an amazing slice of pie. I’m addicted to the Maple Custard pie,” said Victoria Kane, an Arcadia customer .

Whether you’re looking for something sweet or savory, The Pie Hole is a spot to consider to satisfy any craving.
