The women’s soccer team continued its impressive run by shutting out El Camino College-Compton Center 1-0 on Sept. 27.

The team hasn’t lost since its game against Santa Ana on Sept. 6, which the Lancers lost 4-2.

PCC currently enjoys a six game unbeaten streak. Vanessa Capra scored a minute into the game when a deflected shot hit the ECC Compton Center goalie Sherelin Gomez and she quickly capitalized on the rebound.

There were many missed scoring opportunities for both sides.

The Tartar women’s best chances came in the first half when on consecutive possessions they had one shot hit the corner post and moments later another hit the crossbar.

Jessica Capra consistently caught and deflected all the shots that came her way.

Vanessa Capra missed out on two scoring chances by misfiring just wide of the net.

Head Coach Randy Lilavois displayed frustration at some points in the game when he disagreed with some calls that were made by the referees.

The first one resulted when Gomez leapt to stop a shot on goal but landed awkwardly on the ground.

The referee then blew the whistle to stop play, to the distaste of Lilavois and Assistant Coach Reggie Rivas.

The play could have resulted in another PCC goal, but the chance was denied because of the referee’s stoppage.

There was another mind lapse by the referee when ECC Compton Center had twelve players on the field.

“What’s that about?” yelled Lilavois to the referee.

The referee failed to notice the extra player on the field.

The extra player left the field shortly afterward.

PCC managed the game defensively and put offensive pressure on ECC Compton Center to win their South Coast Conference opener at Robinson Stadium.

“We got a long way to go”, said Lilavois.

The team improved its overall record to 4-2-2 and 1-0 in conference play.

PCC’s next game is Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. on the road against Cerritos College.
