Defensive errors and a too-little-too-late offensive run led to the women’s softball team’s 6-4 loss in Tuesday’s conference opener against undefeated El Camino Compton Center (6-0, 1-0).

“We need to work on shutting the door and not allowing the opposing teams extra opportunities,” head coach Monica Tantlinger said . “At this point it’s all about execution. Good defense, good pitching and timely hitting [that] wins ball games. We have not yet played to our ability in these areas so we will continue to work until we do.”

Even with starting players like catcher Allie Lacey and first baseman Audrey Serna out with injuries, the Lancers (2-7, 0-1) were still able to make a small comeback in the sixth inning.

“Not having Allie was definitely a rough position to be in but [freshman catcher] Lyandra Opbroek stepped up behind the plate and had some good at bats for us,” Tantlinger said. “Sara Quintero and Jennifer Pegg helped with some power hitting with Audrey Serna out.”

Designated hitter and pitcher Jennifer Pegg, who went 2-for-4 behind the plate with one run and one RBI, singled to right field to jumpstart the offense. Sophomore first baseman Sara Quintero singled to left field, while sophomore outfielder Viviana Ordaz was walked, loading the bases. It was sophomore outfielder Vanessa Contreras’ single to shortstop that brought Pegg home, breaking PCC’s scoring drought.

The Lancers finished off the successful inning with two hits, three runs and no errors.

“Our energy was there, on and off the field, but I don’t feel like we were all mentally there,” Opbroek said, who came off the bench in place of Lacey and went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Returning pitcher Casey Ramirez, who relived Pegg after one inning, allowed one earned run and struck out three Tartans.

“We need to work much harder on being hungry and confident when we’re up to bat,” Quintero said. “Compton was very hungry at the plate and they had a mission to beat us and they did.”

The Lancers face Cerritos College today at 3 p.m. at Robinson Park.
