Night owls were given the chance to speak to 40 university representatives from across the state and country on University Night, on March 27.

According to Dina Chase, director of transfer services, more students attended this semester than before eager to seek information from prospective universities. “More daytime students participated in University Night this spring than ever before. In fact, many in-district high school students and their parents also attended.” she said.

Representatives were being attentive and helpful to the curious students throughout the night. As UCLA representative, Santiago Bernal, explained, “We tend to be a popular school [at PCC] and students want the details on what is going to make them successful in order to be admitted, it helps students get the inside scoop, and  find out how the process works.”

Students were also taking advantage of having PCC’s financial aid representatives to ask questions about their concerns. Anthony Limon, Computer Science, said, “ I mainly came to get information about scholarships. I think its great; mainly because in the L building it’s really hard to get one on one time with anyone.”

Even though FAFSA and Cal Grants deadlines have passed the school’s representatives informed students about what their upcoming priorities should be. “Now the priority would be the summer because the board of governor’s fee waiver is a state program, and they use that FAFSA 2013-14 application to determine eligibility for the fee waiver starting in the summertime”, said Daniel Niswander.

Students like Irma Carrillo, Psychology, thought financial aid services being present at University Night was useful. “I like the fact that they do have the PCC scholarship and financial aid information as well as the IGETC papers.”

Students gathered around the financial aid stand, looking for information. “Because of what we do here on a yearly basis, tens of thousands of people can get access to one kind or another of types of financial aid, from the fee waiver all the through the grants and scholarships. Some students wouldn’t be able to go to school if that wasn’t being available to them”, Niswander continues.

Overall all University Night was a success according to Chase. “It was a success because students were able to meet university reps, learn about transfer opportunities, and plan their next educational steps”, she said.
