An array of engaging activities on campus will continue this week as part of a time honored tradition with the announcement of Homecoming king and queen at noon today.Homecoming Week falls on the eve of PCC’s homecoming game every year, with an assortment of entertaining activities in which all students are encouraged to participate.

While festivities have been taking place throughout campus, many PCC student onlookers were unaware of the purpose behind the activities. Danielle Ramos, 20, a second year student at PCC, was completely oblivious to the homecoming celebration.

“I didn’t even know we had a homecoming. That’s always an event you associate with high school. But it sounds like a good way to get people involved,” said Ramos

Head of Homecoming events Karina Roman says that the main objective behind the celebrations is to encourage student participation and unity.

“Not only do we celebrate these events to publicize homecoming, but we have them to bring the campus together and keep the idea of school spirit alive. We want the students to feel sense of pride in PCC and just have fun,” said Roman.

Students are also encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing PCC colors and attire, as today marks Homecoming’s annual “Spirit Day.”

Events include a Nintendo Wii Tournament to be held in T110 from 1 to 5 p.m. and tomorrow from 1 to 3 p.m., sponsored by the office of student affairs.

Event will lead up to the homecoming game in which the Pasadena Lancers will take on the Cerritos College Falcons on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Robinson Stadium.

Festivities began Tuesday with the announcement of the homecoming court.

Among the princesses competing for queen are Garnet Reyes, Letishia Noyes, Irene Garcia, Santina Bowers and Rachel-Elizabeth Mills.

Competing nominees campaigned with flyers and snacks to urge students to participate in the voting process.

“It’s extremely exciting to get the chance to represent PCC,”said nominee Garnet Reyes

“Coming from a rough background where I never thought I could be in such a position, it really means a lot. I want toset a positive image for the school.”

Homecoming king will be decided between Joshua Acevedo and Andy Gomez, the first transgender nominee running for king in school history.

“I’ve been shown a lot of support by my friends and the school. I feel like in doing this I am representing those who are maybe too reluctant to make a stand for themselves,” said Gomez.

The announcement was preceded by a freestyle dance battle in the Galloway Plaza. Participants showed off their rhythmic talent, while basketball enthusiasts competed in a three-point shootout in the gym. Winners of both competitions were awarded generous prizes. Student spectators were treated to free snacks and drinks, while they cheered in support of their favorite contenders.

On Wednesday students competed in a no-holds-barred Ping Pong Tournament. The table tennis games commenced in the Alumni Commons, while others tested their endurance at the rock-climbing wall, erected in the Galloway Plaza for the occasion.
