A number of groups from PCC demonstrated against police brutality in front of the C Building on Thursday.”We are here speaking for those who can’t speak anymore,” said student Allegra Padilla, member of the Oct. 22 coalition against police brutality.

Coalition member and former PCC student Marcos Escobar shared the story of Javier Quezada Jr., a former student and mental health patient who was killed by Pasadena police after wielding a pair of scissors at a clinic. “He was shot 15 times in front of his parents,” Escobar said to students gathered in front of the mirror pools.

Organizers chanted, “No justice no peace, no murdering police” along with about 50 students and members of the community attending the protest.

The demonstration was a prelude to the Oct. 22 mass march and rally from Parker Center in Los Angeles to MacArthur Park, site of the May Day Melee when the LAPD assaulted immigrant rights protesters and journalists, including students from PCC.

“Were going to take it [MacArthur Park] back,” said Padilla.

Along with the Oct. 22 coalition, students from Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Atzlan (MECHA) and Students for Social Justice took turns reading outtakes from the book, Stolen Lives, which “provides important and compelling exposures of the nationwide epidemic of police brutality and murder,” according to stolenlives.org.

Flyers were passed out informing students of Thursday’s “Fightin’ words open mic” at Chuco Justice Center and students were informed of statistics and stories on police violence, such as the LAPD beating of handcuffed teenager Donovan Jackson and the slaying of 13 year-old Devon Brown.
