A place to explore creativity, PCC’s Inscape Magazine gives students the opportunity to publish their artistic compositions while learning the different sides to writing.
“Inscape is a student publication, a literary magazine to display the literary and artistic talents of PCC students,” said Manuel Perea, instructor in the English Division and advisor for the magazine.

According to Perea, Inscape introduces students to the business side of writing as they must submit their work and wait to find out if it will be accepted or rejected.

The editorial board of the magazine, composed of students, chooses the work to be published.

According to Perea, every staff member reads the different works, looking for the best pieces.

“We meet as a group to compare our individual evaluations and choose the work that will eventually make its way into the magazine. All work is read anonymously: editors have no idea whose work they are reading,” he said.

Aside from merely gaining recognition, Perea said that being published builds the confidence that is essential to all writers.

“Confidence keeps a writer writing, and it’s the writers who continue writing – who don’t give up – who will be successful. I think it’s almost as important to submit and get rejected as it is to submit and get published,” he said.

By doing so, students are able to learn to accept criticism and not let it hinder them in the future.

“I think it is important to transfer what you are writing onto the printed page,” said Jane Hallinger, professor in the English Division and former advisor for the magazine. “The only thing you lose [if you get rejected] is a piece of paper.”

According to Hallinger, being published in the magazine also gives students an added edge when applying to schools.

“I get to work with students in a way that’s different from the work of the classroom,” said Perea. “I get to see students in a different light, doing something that few of them have ever done before. I get to see them make something they can be proud of.
