PCC’s men’s soccer needed 90 minutes plus all of extra time to draw with Compton El Camino Community Education Center 2-2 on Tuesday at PCC Robinson Stadium. The Lancer’s found the back of the net when Malcolm Linton’s long-throw was flicked on to Daniel Simonian at the far post who headed home to equalize in the last minute of play.

“I knew we would score,” said forward Kendrick Watson who set up PCC’s first score midway through the second half. “It was just a matter of time.”

Compton (1-8-3) (1-12-5) was outplayed throughout the match but was quick to punish PCC mistakes. In the first half, Lancer keeper Harmik Der Gevorgian was caught off-balance allowing forward Ramon Guevara’s free-kick to find it’s way into the back of the net.

Compton forward Yoni Rios timed his run perfectly, getting behind PCC’s defense, only to be brought down inside the box. Compton cried for a penalty but none was given. Rios eventually gained control of the ball and was brought down again by Lancer midfielder Gurgen Adzemian.

This time a penalty was called.

Guevara was denied his second strike of the day by Der Gevorgian, but the rebound was colleted by Rios who slotted home for a 2-0 lead.

PCC’s second half attack was relentless. Ricky Reyes and Abbas Said each hit the woodwork with bicycle shots. Compton keeper Anthony Pacenscia was in perfect position time and time again, defending Long throw ins from Linton. He stopped Leonardo Vergara one on one on two separate occasions.

For Vergara the third time was the charm, collecting Watson’s perfect ball and taking his time to line up his shot, going far post to finally a ball by Pacenscia.

The last half hour featured PCC pressing for all it’s worth, desperately trying to draw even throwing everything they had at Compton, including bringing Der Gevorgian in on the attack, while Compton was busy faking injuries and taking their time on throws and kicks in an attempt to kill the clock.

When the whistle blew the crowd cheered wildly and the Lancer football team rushed the field (they were waiting for practice to begin) celebrating with the soccer team. “It was like the Rose Bowl,” said a relieved Watson.
