President Obama proposed making two years of community college free for students in a video statement posted Thursday on the White House Facebook page that comes ahead of his pending State of the Union address scheduled for January 20.
If all 50 states participate the proposal could save a full-time community college student approximately $3,800 in tuition per year, according to the White House website.
The proposal would allow students who attend community college at least half-time and maintain a 2.5 GPA to be eligible to receive the free tuition.
Community colleges would be expected to offer academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities or occupational training programs. Federal funds would cover three-quarters of the average cost and participating states will be expected to contribute the remaining funds necessary to waive tuition for those eligible.
President Obama is due to speak in Tennessee today and expected to reveal more on the proposed program.
