A second alarm fire created a backup of traffic and a sight of billowing smoke clouds near campus today. The smoke clouds were visible from the northeast side of the campus due to a fire occurring on the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Sunnyslope Avenue.

The fire began at 3:40 p.m. at Action Auto Center located on 2880 East Colorado Blvd. due to an alleged roofing accident where a bucket of tar exploded. “It was like a Napalm explosion” said Mike Nolan, the owner, “it reminded me of Vietnam.”

The fire occurred about a mile away from PCC campus with large smoke clouds reaching noticeably closer.

The fire was a second alarm fire, according to fire officials, causing the eastern side of Colorado Boulevard to be shut down by police officials with traffic backing up for blocks.

Aid was called in from the Pasadena, San Marino, and Arcadia fire departments to extinguish the fire.

“Thank God everyone was alright,” said Nolan, who’s been doing business in Pasadena for 30 years.

The dollar damage estimate amount is yet to be known. However, three vehicles were said to be damaged by the fire with a value estimated at $250 thousand, according to Nolan.
