The Courier staff won a range of awards from first places to honorable mentions at the Journalism Association of Community College’s convention on Saturday.The fall convention was hosted at Cal State Fullerton and community colleges from across Southern California attended. Journalism students at the convention attend workshops to listen to an array of speakers who have knowledge in their field and participate in on-the-spot competitions.

In the on-the-spot competitions, the Courier took three first place awards – Karoline Steavenson for a theater review, Stacey Wang for tabloid layout design and John Avery for copyediting. Two participants from the Courier placed in the sports writing competition; Jason Lowder came in third and Franco Sui Yuan placed fourth.

The Courier also came away with several mail-in awards, in which the Courier sent in issues of the newspaper from the past year to be judged against other Southern California community colleges in several categories. Included, were first place award in editorial writing by Don Martirez and second place award for online photo by Keith Lubow.

“We prepared for JACC throughout the school year with each issue we put out, and our hard work paid off,” said Stacey Wang, Courier Editor-in-Chief. “From issue to issue, we’ve been working harder and striving to get better. Hopefully, it’ll show at state.”
