UC and Cal State representatives advised students to visit the transfer center and apply for scholarships among other things on Tuesday Oct. 16  in Harbeson Hall, in a transfer workshop held by the Associated Students and Office of Student Affairs.

“The whole purpose of the workshop was to spread awareness to the students about resources on campus,” said Eric Bustamante, intern at the Office of Student Affairs.

Aside from the free food and beverages, the workshop offered students important information regarding transferring to a CSU or UC. Representatives from UCLA and CSU Los Angeles answered students questions regarding transferring and showed them step by step how to correctly submit college applications.

“It all comes down to what your official transcript says,” said Primaveda Reza, a representative from CSU Los Angeles.

Trammel Bradford representative from UCLA who works with transfers, advised students to be prepared and make sure to get 60 transferable units.

“Make sure you are prepared. While there is a unilateral UC requirement, we only count the 60 transferable units. You could have worked with Obama in space, but if you don’t have 60 transferable units, [you are] denied,” said Bradford.

He also talked to students about the selection process for schools and how they vary.

“We select differently. Ask UC representatives how they select students. At UCLA we select students by major,” said Bradford.

Students in attendance felt the workshop was an easier way to receive the information they need to transfer.

“They were really enthusiastic and had a lot of great information that you can’t get from a website,” said Viviana Juan, mechanical engineering.

Christian Ticas, engineering was shocked by the finances of transferring.

“It’s definitely a real eye opener to see how much money it’s going to cost me to apply to all these colleges. It would take me eight hours [of working] to pay for one application,” said Ticas.

Tameka Alexander, counselor, encourages students to visit the transfer center in L110.

“This was just quick and dirty; the transfer center offers more in depth sessions. We will assist students with filling out the applications,” said Alexander.

There will be another transfer workshop in Harbeson Hall on Nov. 27 at noon.
