Dwayne Cable joined PCC’s executive team as the school’s first ever vice president of information technology over the summer.

Although Cable is PCC’s first vice president of information technology, he is no stranger to this field. Cable has been in this field for 28 years.

“I always felt that technology was going to be where a lot of the action was going, and everything was going to have some aspects of technology in it,” said Cable in an interview.

Cable is originally from the smoky mountains of Western North Carolina, where he graduated from Wayne Community College and has a bachelor’s degree and M.B.A. from Western Carolina University. Even though Cable has been in the information technology field for a long time, his degrees are actually both in accounting. However, Cable said he never really had a desire to be an accountant or a tax specialist.

“Cable has had much experience with enhancing the teaching and learning environment of colleges through technology,” said PCC’s President Mark Rocha in an email. Cable previously served as vice president of information technology for Joliet Junior College. He has also held positions in the information technology field at numerous other community colleges and universities.

In his new position, Cable’s focus will be bringing PCC’s technology into the 21st century. “My focus is to develop a strategy for [making] PCC into a global internet based institution,” said Cable.

Cable will be converting PCC’s system to a new Student Information System, so that students will be able to quickly and easily obtain almost all current services online. “Everything you do will be right through the web. [It] doesn’t matter what service you’re going to ask for or what time of day or night,” said Cable.

“[I am] getting all of the technology cleaned up, modernized, and business processes in place for the college as a whole to operate much more efficiently. I am very focused on the strategies on how to do that and to move the institution in that direction,” Cable said.

Because he has just started, he is spending most of his time in meetings, listening and understanding what the issues are. He has already met with faculty groups and administrative groups to get a feel for what issues they have. Cable is looking into setting up open forums for students to ask any kind of technology questions they have.

Cable is excited to be at PCC and is very confident in the issues that PCC faces and said he will get everything under control.

“All of us at PCC are delighted that we have been able to attract a leader with the experience and accomplishments of Cable,” Rocha said.
